CAREER OF ACTING

WHAT IS ACTING?
Acting is the work of an actor or actress, which is a person in
theatre, television, film, or any other story telling medium who tells
the story by portraying a character, and usually speaking or singing
the written text or play..

Α CAREER MEANS
Career is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a person’s
“course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life).”

It can also pertain to an occupation or a profession that usually
involves special training or formal education, and is considered to be
a person’s life work..

PURSUING AN ACTING CAREER
In order to become an actor or become an actress, you must first have
a passion and drive to learn your craft. However, many young actors
make the mistake of not realizing that there is much more to living
the actor’s life. A key part of beginning (or transitioning into) your
acting career is insuring your financial stability. Before you begin,
you should have a supply of cash in place..

REQUIREMENTS OF AN ACTOR/ACTRESS
Acting as a career involves more than just performing in movies.
Working actors perform in live theater productions, at theme parks, in
commercials and on television shows. As actors start their careers,
many work multiple jobs, such as working as extras in films or TV, to
support themselves financially.

The more experience an actor has, the more desirable he or she is to a
director..

TIPS ON HOW TO BECOME Α GOOD ACTOR/ACTRESS
*Acting is first and foremost a craft. The best of the
Hollywood actors understand this and no matter how far they have come
in their careers, they are constantly looking to improve upon their
craft. They take classes, work with acting and dialogue coaches, they
study life experiences, etc. They know full well that even after a
lifetime of work and study, they may never reach absolute perfection.

So, for our Kannywood actors/actresses, it’s imperative that you take
a wide variety of acting classes. Work in a wide variety of styles
with as many different groups of people that you can find. Try it all.
From Shakespeare to comedy, from improve to cinema verite — the more
you know, the more well rounded you’ll be and ultimately, the better
prepared you’ll be for whatever roles come your way.

*Be Willing to do What it Takes.
No, that doesn’t mean what you think it means. Don’t worry about the
“casting couch/Director.” But you must be willing to do what it takes
for the sake of your craft. You might ultimately have to sacrifice
certain aspects of your life to ensure that you will have success as a
working Kannywood actor.

If you’re lucky enough to land a role in a major film or television
production, realize that this is not the glamorous Kannywood job you
might have thought it would be.

It’s a lot of work, often 14-20 hours per day, in all kinds of
conditions and at least initially, for not much money.

Even actors who make millions of naira per movie still must “work” to
earn their keep. They are on location for months at a time and every
day they commit themselves both emotionally and physically to their
roles. It can be extremely exhausting. You must prepare yourself both
mentally and physically for this type of challenge..

Note
It’s one of the many reasons why Hollywood stars have trainers,
psychologists, plastic surgeons, nutritionists and divorce attorneys
at their beck and call. Their job is hardly an easy job.!

*Commit Yourself
I once had a friend of mine tell me that there are no bad actors, just
actors who aren’t willing to “fully commit” themselves to their craft.

Just as I mentioned above that you have to make certain sacrifices to
make it as an actor in Hollywood, one of those is your ego. If you’re
about looking cool, or trying to maintain a certain image, then acting
might not be for you.

The best actors are those who are willing to let themselves be 100%
consumed by the role they are playing. They physically become the
person they portray.

If you’re in the middle of delivering your lines and suddenly you let
yourself drift back into your own life, you are not fully committed to
the role and your performance will show it. You have to literally
“forget yourself” to help ensure the quality of your performance..

*Be Nice
Kannywood is all about helping those you know because they might one
day be in a position to help you as well. So, you need to remember
this steadfast rule — be nice to everyone. From agents assistants to
fellow cast members to whomever you meet in Kannywood. Remember, that
assistant you treated poorly two years ago might one day become a
casting director, film producer, talented agent or whatever. And trust
me, they’ll remember those who stomped on their toes on their way up
the ladder. Conversely, they’ll remember those who were nice the whole
way up and they’ll be that much more inclined to help them achieve
their own goals..

THE ACTOR’S LIFE
Your foray into life as an actor will be made much smoother, if other
aspects of your life are in order. If you are moving into a new city,
spend some time setting up a comfortable apartment. Even if you share
a space, be sure you have an area that is quiet enough for your
private time. If possible, set aside part of your living space for
your work as an actor. This “office” will help to create a physical
focus for your budding career..

You may also consider joining a gym. Keeping your instrument in good
shape is always important. If you have the time, involve yourself in
the local community, especially in the arts. Keep applying yourself
and anything that comes your way you will enjoy and be surprised. The
more people you network with, the more enriching your career will be..

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT- I always encourage kannywood actors to emulate
Ali Nuhu, he means business in his career. Come to think of his
numerous awards (both National and international awards), people
always mention his name as α figure among Nigerian actors.

There are other good actors like Sani Musa Danja, Sadeeq Sani Sadeeq,
Ibrahim Maishunko, Adams Α Zango, Baballe Hayatu and others. There are
good actresses like Rahama Hassan, Nafisat Abdullahi, Jamila Nagudu,
Fati Ladan ETC and also Fateema El Yusuf with Haleema Atete among the
new entrants

REASON- Many actors/actresses are into acting just for the fun of it,
and it’s never like that. Acting is an occupation and one can build
his career in it..

AIM- To bring out the hidden talent of our dear actors/actresses and
the crew members, so that kannywood can compete with any other movie
industry in the world..
